Synopsis
Sugarland perform "Stay" against a stark black backdrop, with Jennifer Nettles delivering the song's plea and pain while Kristian Bush accompanies her on acoustic guitar. The stripped-down presentation centers every gesture, glance, and vocal inflection as the narrator confronts her role as the other woman in an affair. Her desperate request for the man to remain gradually gives way to self-respect, and the performance ends with her rejecting a relationship in which she can never be fully loved.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was deliberately designed as a simple performance piece rather than a narrative production. The black background removes visual distractions and keeps attention on the emotional force of the song.
- "Stay" was released in 2007 as the fourth and final single from Sugarland's album "Enjoy the Ride."
- Jennifer Nettles wrote the song alone, making it Sugarland's first single credited solely to her. She drew inspiration from Reba McEntire's "Whoever's in New England," but shifted the point of view from the betrayed wife to the other woman.
- Unlike many Sugarland recordings, Kristian Bush does not sing harmony vocals on "Stay." He plays acoustic guitar, while the only other instrumentation is organ performed by his brother, Brandon Bush.
- The video won Duo Video of the Year at the 2008 CMT Music Awards and was later ranked No. 10 on CMT's "100 Greatest Videos" list.
