Synopsis

In the better-known video, The Raconteurs become larger-than-life racers competing in a perilous soapbox derby. Each band member takes on a colorful racing persona, while Paul Reubens plays a crooked pit boss determined to secure victory for Jack Lawrence's racer. Sabotage, crashes, cliffside danger and even a blowgun attack turn the event into comic melodrama. Lawrence ultimately wins through the pit boss's dirty tricks. A separate video presents the band performing the song in a stripped-down performance setting.

Factoids & Trivia

  • There are two official videos for "Steady, As She Goes." The first is performance-based and premiered on MTV2 on March 10, 2006. The soapbox-race version followed in June 2006 and premiered through Yahoo! Music.
  • Paul Reubens appears as the unscrupulous pit boss. His presence connected the clip to the offbeat comic persona audiences knew from Pee-wee Herman, while his character's exaggerated sabotage gives the race its silent-movie and melodrama flavor.
  • The band members are presented as fictional racing heroes rather than simply appearing as themselves. The characters include B.B. Bumkin, PK, LJ and the Copper Kid.
  • The song was the first composition Jack White and Brendan Benson wrote together. Its success helped turn their songwriting partnership into the Raconteurs, with Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler later completing the lineup.
  • "Steady, As She Goes" became the Raconteurs' debut single and was later nominated for a 2007 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
