Synopsis

In a surreal theater resembling a dark magic show, Maximo Park perform "Apply Some Pressure" amid deep red velvet, stark black-and-white floors, and unsettling stage imagery. The band plays blindfolded while Paul Smith delivers the song directly to the camera, moving between theatrical sets and cabinets whose drawers open in time with the music. His head appears among the furniture, he falls through a wardrobe, and a sudden nosebleed goes unnoticed as images of bones, clocks, and bodies intensify the video's feverish atmosphere.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Two different videos were released for the song. The first accompanied the February 2005 single release, while the more elaborate theatrical version was made for the October 2005 reissue.
  • Paul Smith later described the first video as being inspired by the films of David Lynch. It presents the band behind a wall of people and mixes their performance with unusual visual effects.
  • The second video was built around the visual language of stage magic, with Smith appearing in moving bureau drawers, wardrobes, and a box used in a sawing-in-half illusion.
  • The theatrical clip emphasizes physical unease through recurring images of blood, bones, clocks, and distorted bodies rather than following a conventional narrative.
  • The song became one of Maximo Park's defining early tracks, reaching No. 17 on the UK Singles Chart after its 2005 re-release.
  • "Apply Some Pressure" also appeared in games including Burnout Revenge, SSX on Tour, and SingStar Rocks!, helping introduce the band to audiences beyond the UK indie scene.
