Synopsis

The commonly aired version places tiny Hard-Fi members inside a working cash machine, laboring like factory or mine workers to produce, paint and deliver banknotes. As the machine dispenses money to the outside world, exhaustion and resentment build until the workers revolt, wrecking their miniature workplace in a series of explosions. Richard Archer arrives moments later, hoping to withdraw cash, but finds the machine out of service and leaves with the song's resigned punchline: "Oh knickers!"

Factoids & Trivia

• There are three known videos for "Cash Machine": the original low-budget heist film, the miniature-workers ATM version, and an alternative adult-oriented version.

• The original video was made for less than GBP1,000. The reported budget mainly covered pizza, beer and masks depicting political figures, while other elements came through favors from friends.

• For the original heist version, the band filmed near Heathrow Airport without formal permission, setting up close to the runway while planes passed overhead. The location was practical as well as visual: Hard-Fi were based in nearby Staines.

• The ATM version became the principal television clip because broadcasters were less willing to show the original video's theft and other illegal activity.

• The alternative version follows a GBP10 note as it moves through a chain of transactions involving drinking, drugs, theft and a strip club. It was made specifically with mobile-phone viewing in mind.

• The original video later appeared as hidden content on Hard-Fi's 2006 DVD release "In Operation," preserving a rarely seen early version of the clip.
