Synopsis

Over three days, a lonely man and woman move through nearly identical routines, often shown in split screen as they pass through the same places at different times. Their paths connect through a subway billboard featuring a woman sitting on a bench. The woman adds rain and a splash from a passing taxi, while the man responds with an umbrella, a companion, and an encouraging question mark. When she completes his drawing with a heart, the two finally meet in the rain.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Samaire Armstrong plays the woman, while Jason Adelman plays the man. Daniel Powter appears separately, performing at a piano in Los Angeles' Pershing Square.
  • The subway scenes were filmed on the Los Angeles Metro Red Line. The video's visual concept depends on the characters visiting the same locations at different times, making their eventual meeting feel like the completion of a pattern.
  • The billboard artwork changes gradually from a bleak image into a romantic exchange. The red and black markers help distinguish the man's more hopeful additions from the woman's initially negative ones.
  • The video premiered online through Yahoo! in early 2005 and had reportedly been streamed more than one million times by August of that year.
  • After its television debut on VH1 in January 2006, the video entered the channel's Top 20 Countdown and was later placed in heavy rotation.
  • It was among the most-watched music videos on the Internet in 2006, with more than 9.8 million views reported that year.
  • VH1 later ranked it No. 17 on its Top 40 Videos of the Year list for 2006.
  • The video received a MuchMoreMusic Award nomination in 2006 and a Best Male Video nomination at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards Japan.

Lyrics

Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' on

Cause you had a bad day
