Synopsis

In a surreal, gothic setting, Karen Elson moves through a decaying house filled with broken furniture, strange shadows, snakes, and the remains of an old piano. Jack and Meg White appear as ghostly, theatrical figures, while Elson shifts between vulnerable stillness and frantic movement. The imagery grows increasingly ominous as she encounters a horse outside the house. In the final shot, the animal rears above her as if ready to strike, but the screen cuts to black before the impact.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Karen Elson met Jack White while making the video. They married shortly afterward in 2005.
  • The video features Elson alongside snakes, a horse, and the remains of an old piano, reinforcing the song's unsettling imagery of beauty being altered or corrupted.
  • Floria Sigismondi later recalled that her five-month-old daughter was spontaneously included in the shoot as a baby version of Meg White. The child was placed among the plates Meg was breaking.
  • Hair stylist Pamela Neal added extensions to the horse's mane during the production.
  • The closing horse image was one of Sigismondi's favorite moments from the video.
  • The clip was included at No. 21 on Yahoo!'s 2005 list of the "Top 25 Spookiest Videos."
  • "Blue Orchid" was written and recorded unusually quickly for a major single. Jack White reportedly wrote it only about six weeks before its release.
  • The song's signature guitar sound came from an Electro-Harmonix POG octave pedal, whose unusual setting helped inspire the central riff.
  • Jack White later described "Blue Orchid" as the song that saved the *Get Behind Me Satan* album.
