Synopsis

John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" video connects the song's bleak social commentary with images of his Liverpool childhood. • The video was created for the 2003 DVD compilation Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon, rather than being a contemporary promotional film from the song's original 1970 release.

• Filming took place at Dovedale Primary School, Strawberry Field in Woolton, and Mendips, the Menlove Avenue house where Lennon spent much of his childhood.

• Mendips had recently been acquired by Yoko Ono Lennon, donated to the National Trust, and restored for public visits when the video was made.

• A separate 1997 video was produced for the John Lennon Anthology version of the song. That film works as a short documentary about Lennon's life and uses Lennon himself as narrator.

• "Working Class Hero" was recorded for John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band with only Lennon singing and playing acoustic guitar. The recording reportedly took more than 100 takes, an unusually demanding process for such a stripped-down performance.

• The song's blunt language caused problems for radio broadcasters, with some U.S. stations refusing to play it. The video consequently presents the track primarily as a reflective biographical statement rather than a conventional television pop clip.
