Synopsis

A young boy discovers a mysterious world hidden beneath a staircase, where rows of black mechanical boxes come alive in time with the music. Their tiny moving parts, glowing interiors, and unsettling transformations turn an ordinary domestic space into a secret laboratory of sound. As the boy explores deeper, the objects seem to possess a life of their own, creating a dreamlike balance between childhood wonder and quiet menace. The video gives "Nannou" a visual identity that is delicate, strange, and faintly sinister.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Nannou" is built around manipulated wind-up music-box sounds, and the video's black mechanical objects mirror that unusual source material.
  • The video is commonly dated to 2003, although some film databases list its UK release as 2005.
  • It was included on Warp Vision: The Videos 1989-2004, Warp Records' large video compilation released in 2004.
  • At roughly four minutes, the piece is one of Aphex Twin's more compact visual works.
  • "Nannou" appeared as the third track on the 1999 Windowlicker single, providing a notably gentle contrast to the title track and the abrasive piece commonly known as "Formula."
  • The track has often been described as a dedication to Richard D. James' girlfriend at the time of its release.
