Synopsis

A tower PC enters a stark digital dance arena and transforms into a humanoid robot. As Playgroup's upbeat disco groove drives the action, the animated machine performs an increasingly elaborate routine, shifting between robotic gestures, disco footwork, breakdancing and flamboyant showmanship. Lighting effects and glowing floor tiles emphasize each move, turning the computer into both performer and dance instructor. The clip builds its appeal around the contrast between an ordinary piece of hardware and an endlessly expressive, technically accomplished dancer.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was created as a computer-animated film by the French design collective H5, which described its central character as a robot dance teacher.

• The routine draws on recognizable moves and styles associated with Daft Punk, Michael Jackson, James Brown and John Travolta. The clip also references Michael Jackson's moonwalk and the illuminated floor effect from "Billie Jean," as well as Angus Young's rock-style duckwalk.

• "Number One" was released in 2001 as part of Playgroup's self-titled album. Playgroup was the project of British producer and designer Trevor Jackson.
