Synopsis

The A*Teens perform "Heartbreak Lullaby" in a staged, cinematic setting while footage from Disney's The Princess Diaries appears throughout. Images of Mia Thermopolis' sudden transformation into royalty, her new life at court, and the romantic and emotional complications surrounding her are intercut with close-ups and group performance shots. The video presents the song as a polished soundtrack tie-in, combining the band's youthful pop energy with the movie's fairy-tale atmosphere and themes of love, uncertainty, and growing up.

Factoids & Trivia

• "Heartbreak Lullaby" was recorded for the European and Asian soundtrack editions of The Princess Diaries. The movie had already been released in the United States and Latin America, which is why the single was primarily promoted outside those markets.

• The video was filmed in Germany in October 2001, with reports identifying Munich as the filming location.

• The version used in the video is the upbeat "Ray Hedges 7-inch Mix," rather than the original ballad version. This gives the visual a more energetic pop feel than the song's more reflective alternate arrangement.

• Movie footage is integrated directly into the video, making the clip function partly as a promotional piece for The Princess Diaries and partly as a conventional A*Teens performance video.

• The song was written by Cathy Dennis, Jan Kask, and Peter Mansson. Dennis later became known for writing major pop hits for artists including Kylie Minogue.

• The single reached No. 6 in Sweden, No. 77 in Germany, and No. 97 in Switzerland.

• A ballad version was later included on the European release of New Arrival, while the song also appeared on a 2002 reissue of Teen Spirit.

• The single's additional track, "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday," is a cover of the 1973 Wizzard holiday song.
