Roy Orbison - I Drove All Night

Music Video | USA

Wiki

Synopsis

In a stark black-and-white setting, a young man drives through the night and across a barren desert to reunite with the woman he loves. Jason Priestley plays the determined traveler, while Jennifer Connelly waits at the journey's destination. Their reunion unfolds through intimate embraces, playful moments around the car, and dreamlike images. Roy Orbison appears throughout in distorted archival footage, creating a ghostly presence that links the modern romance to his posthumous performance.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Orbison recorded "I Drove All Night" in 1987, but his version was not released until after his death in December 1988. The single came out in 1992.
  • The video stars Jason Priestley and Jennifer Connelly, whose pairing gives the clip a distinctly early-1990s pop-culture feel.
  • Orbison never filmed new performance footage for the video. His appearances were assembled from archival material and treated with visual distortion.
  • The song first appeared on the 1991 compilation "Nintendo: White Knuckle Scorin'," a project connected to Nintendo and dedicated in part to the memory of booking agent Bobby Brooks.
  • Small background details reference the Mario series and the Nintendo compilation, making the video an unusual crossover between Orbison's posthumous comeback and early-1990s video game marketing.
  • Jeff Lynne produced the Orbison recording for the posthumous album "King of Hearts," which also included the song.
  • Released as a single in June 1992, Orbison's version reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart.
