Synopsis
The video presents "A Change Is Gonna Come?" as a deliberately makeshift boy-band performance. Four young skaters pose and mime along to the song in a local Edinburgh bar, with the footage intercut with scenes filmed inside Deep Sea World aquarium in North Queensferry. The contrast between the earnest pop presentation, the casual performers and the unusual underwater setting gives the clip a playful, homemade feel. Its tongue-in-cheek approach matches The High Fidelity's eclectic psychedelic pop aesthetic.
Factoids & Trivia
- Two promotional videos were made for "A Change Is Gonna Come?" and issued together on an enhanced CD in 2000.
- The main video used four local skaters as a deliberately fictional boy band rather than presenting The High Fidelity in a conventional performance setting.
- Aquarium footage was filmed at Deep Sea World in North Queensferry, while the remaining scenes were shot in a bar in Edinburgh.
- A second, much simpler video featured Sean Dickson eating bananas while attempting to mime the song. It was filmed in a single take, converted to black and white and kept because the crew found the result too funny to repeat.
- The two video concepts reportedly emerged during a pub conversation at Pat's Taps on Constitution Street.
- The song appears on The High Fidelity's debut album, Demonstration, whose music combined alternative pop, electronic elements, psychedelic rock and orchestral arrangements recorded in India.
- Demonstration was written and produced by Sean Dickson, who had previously fronted The Soup Dragons.
