Synopsis

Madness turn "Night Boat to Cairo" into a deliberately ramshackle Egyptian expedition. Wearing colonial-style outfits and pith helmets, the band perform against a visibly artificial pyramid backdrop while Suggs sings along with bouncing-ball lyrics. During the song's extended instrumental passages, the members dash around the studio, strike comic poses, march in formation, and launch into the band's trademark Nutty Train. The cheap effects, chaotic movement, and playful energy make the video feel more like a drunken rehearsal than a polished pop promo.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was made in a hurry to promote the 1980 *Work, Rest and Play* EP. The record company had initially been reluctant to commission a video, leaving the band little time to develop an elaborate concept.

• Rather than filming in Egypt, Madness used a studio and a chroma-key desert backdrop. The deliberately obvious effect became part of the video's charm.

• Chris Foreman later recalled that the shoot took place around midnight because the band were preparing to leave for America. He also said the group had been drinking and had fun making the clip.

• The karaoke-style presentation, complete with bouncing lyrics, was a practical solution to the limited production time. It also emphasizes the song's unusual structure, which contains a long instrumental section with no conventional chorus.

• A pair of potted plants and Dave Robinson's dog were used to give the studio set a little more atmosphere. The dog makes an unplanned-looking cameo among the band members.

• The band members' running, marching, and synchronized fooling around helped establish the loose, physical humor associated with Madness during the *One Step Beyond...* era.
