Synopsis
Journey performs "When You Love a Woman" inside an expansive, sparsely furnished recording studio. The video keeps the focus on the reunited classic lineup, moving between Steve Perry's expressive vocal performance and close-ups of Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory, and Steve Smith as they play. Soft lighting and restrained editing give the clip an intimate, polished feel, matching the song's romantic message. Rather than illustrating a separate love story, the video presents the band itself as the emotional center of the song.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed at the Scoring Stage at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, California.
- "When You Love a Woman" was the lead single from Journey's 1996 album "Trial by Fire," the band's first studio album with Steve Perry since "Raised on Radio" in 1986.
- Steve Perry later recalled that he was suffering severe pain from a degenerative hip condition while making the video. He said he packed the left side of his body in ice between takes.
- The clip is one of the last filmed performances of Journey's classic Perry-led lineup. Perry would not tour behind "Trial by Fire," and the band later continued with Steve Augeri as lead vocalist.
- Neal Schon uses a distinctive white guitar in the video rather than his better-known Gibson Les Paul.
- The song became Journey's first and only No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, where it remained for four weeks. It also reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
- The recording received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 39th Grammy Awards in 1997.
- The video was included on Journey's 2003 compilation DVD "Greatest Hits 1978-1997."
