Rival Consoles - Odyssey

Music Video

Wiki

Synopsis

Abstract forms drift, bloom and fracture in a constantly shifting field of light. Macro images of glass objects become luminous shapes, rippling color patterns and kaleidoscopic textures, while analog video interference breaks the imagery into unstable fragments. The visuals move in close sympathy with the track's gradual, spacey development, alternating between smooth organic flows and sudden glitches. Rather than following a narrative, the clip creates a hypnotic audiovisual environment where physical materials are transformed into something that feels both natural and machine-made.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was premiered online on October 8, 2013, ahead of the release of the Odyssey EP on Erased Tapes.
  • Its source material includes macro footage of glass objects filmed under different lighting conditions. The production used several glass goblets and experimented with directing various light sources through them.
  • An old circuit-bent video processor was used to distort and corrupt the flowing images. The processing could be controlled in response to the music, allowing the glitches to function as part of the performance rather than as random visual noise.
  • The video's analog techniques complement Ryan Lee West's approach to the Odyssey material, which emphasized minimal arrangements, hardware-based sound design and short recordings of physical events such as ice cracking, mechanical clicks and debris.
  • Contemporary coverage compared the blurred, kaleidoscopic imagery with the visual atmosphere of "2001: A Space Odyssey," linking the clip's retro-futurist look to the track's spacious electronic sound.
