Synopsis

Kathryn Calder performs in a surreal, brightly colored dance world where geometric creatures appear one after another against a dark studio backdrop. Beginning with simple, abstract forms, the parade develops through increasingly elaborate animal costumes, including a worm, fish, octopus, crab, dinosaur, bird, pony, and monkey. Projected animation, sharp lighting, and the dancers' exaggerated movements give the video a playful, theatrical quality. The sequence ultimately arrives at a human figure represented by Calder herself.

• The video was conceived as a "weird, fun dance video" for the electro-pop track from Calder's album "Bright and Vivid."

• Its central idea is animal evolution. The costumes become progressively more complex as the sequence moves from basic shapes toward more advanced creatures and, finally, a human form.

• Each costume was designed with additional geometric planes or polygons compared with the preceding one, creating a visible progression in complexity.

• The costumes were made from large sheets of foamcore. An earlier buckyball prototype made from paper mache proved too heavy and rough for the finished concept.

• Colorful animations were projected directly onto the costumes during the shoot rather than added entirely in post-production.

• The production used a cast of dancers, with Sessy Lee Slater and Peng Cherry credited for performing the creature roles. Calder appears as the final human figure.

• The shoot took place at Silverline Studios and lasted approximately 12 hours, with the team filming one costume at a time.
