Synopsis

A young woman moves through a deserted industrial site that gradually transforms into a feverish underground rave. As Jon Hopkins' pounding electronic track intensifies, her behavior becomes increasingly physical, erratic, and trance-like. The video shifts between the dark club environment and stark daylight scenes, blurring the boundary between an actual night out and a hallucinated afterimage. Her encounter with another reveler and her increasingly violent dancing suggest a mind and body overwhelmed by sound, sensation, and the loss of ordinary control.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was released on December 4, 2013, during the period when Hopkins' album "Immunity" was receiving major critical attention and a Mercury Prize nomination.

• The production used Millennium Mills, a derelict industrial building in London that had also been used as a filming location for "Full Metal Jacket."

• The shoot took place during a particularly cold London December. The production team had difficulty finding a suitable location before settling on Millennium Mills.

• Amanda Wass plays the central character. Tom Haines described her audition as unusually committed and said her intense performance was essential to carrying the video.

• The visual concept was built around the contrast between darkness and light in the music, using shifts between the club-like interior and daylight imagery to create an almost synesthetic effect.

• Lightning imagery was added during the edit. Editor Dan Sherwen reportedly used stock footage of lightning strikes because the production team feared it had not captured enough material during filming.

• "Collider" received three nominations at the 2014 UK Music Video Awards: Best Dance Video, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. It won Best Editing.
