Synopsis
Set in and around a laundromat, the video follows a shirt and a pair of blue jeans as they develop an unlikely romantic connection. While PAPA performs nearby, the two garments move through attraction, intimacy, separation and a dramatic struggle to remain together. By giving ordinary clothes the emotional roles normally played by people, the video turns the song's themes of longing, confusion and personal freedom into a playful yet surprisingly moving love story.
Factoids & Trivia
- "Young Rut" was released in 2013 as a single from PAPA's debut album, "Tender Madness."
- The video's central idea came from treating clothing as a metaphor for people trapped in circumstances they did not choose. The garments are permanently associated with human bodies, yet appear to be searching for lives of their own.
- The band members described the concept as a kind of grown-up Disney film, comparing its emotional structure to a romantic version of "Finding Nemo."
- Darren Weiss explained that the song deals with personal freedom, the complicated relationship between young people and their parents, and the confusion of wanting independence without knowing exactly how to achieve it.
- The video helped give the song a visual identity distinct from a conventional band performance. Its unusual premise was widely noted by music blogs and entertainment outlets covering PAPA's 2013 debut campaign.
- PAPA consisted of Darren Weiss, formerly of Girls, and Danny Presant. The pair had known each other since childhood and had played music together long before the band's debut album.
