Wiki

Synopsis

A fish breaks free from its rural home and is swept into the overwhelming world of the city. As it travels through unfamiliar streets and encounters strange sights, the creature experiences both the glamour and the darker impulses associated with urban life. The video contrasts the quiet countryside with Seoul's crowded, eccentric energy, turning the fish's journey into a surreal coming-of-age adventure. Its wide-eyed perspective gives the song's idea of a "sin city" an unusual and playful visual form.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "SINCITY" was created as part of the International SinCity Film Award, a 2011 competition organized by interfilm Berlin and Genero for music videos and short films inspired by the song.
  • The competition attracted 85 submissions from 27 countries. Thirty entries reached the final competition, with seven awards carrying a combined prize value of 20,000 euros.
  • The winning video came from South Korea. Filmmakers Nils Clauss and Stuart Howe were living and working in Seoul when they produced the film, which helped shape its contrast between rural surroundings and the metropolis.
  • The project was a collaboration between Clauss' CONTENTed FILMS and Howe's STUDIO 163. The production also received support from Seoul locations and contributors, including Norangjin fish market.
  • Soyeon Kim is credited as the girl appearing in the video.
  • Cinematographer Joseph Fortebraccio lists the film among his music-video work and notes that it won the Best Cinematography award at the Sincity Film Award Berlin.
  • The song was written in collaboration with producer Guy Chambers, who worked with SCHMIDT on the material that became her debut album, "Above Sin City," released in March 2012.
