Synopsis

Girls spend a hazy night moving through San Francisco, drifting between friends, parties, streets, bars, and late-night food stops. Christopher Owens and Chet "JR" White appear amid loose, affectionate scenes of drinking, flirting, dancing, kissing, and aimless wandering. The video feels less like a conventional performance piece than a dreamy record of an impulsive night out, with the city's lights, familiar faces, and fleeting encounters blending into a slow-motion portrait of youthful freedom and melancholy.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in San Francisco, the band's hometown, during one all-night session in December 2008.
  • The production deliberately relied on the natural chemistry between Girls and their friends. Rather than tightly choreographing every moment, the filmmakers followed the group through situations resembling an ordinary night out.
  • Much of the footage was shot at approximately 100 frames per second, far above the standard 24 frames per second. The resulting true slow motion gives the video its floating, photographic quality.
  • The creative approach avoided digital effects and edits timed closely to the music. The aim was to let the images unfold patiently and create an emotional experience instead of a conventional, tightly synchronized promo.
  • A convenience-store sequence involved real shoplifting. The group reportedly took more items than appeared in the finished video, including champagne that they drank outside the store.
  • The shoot used approximately $50,000 worth of lenses while moving through a run-down San Francisco neighborhood.
  • "Hellhole Ratrace" served as Girls' first official music video and promoted the band's 2009 debut album, *Album*.
