Synopsis

Depeche Mode appear as shifting silhouettes, fragmented bodies and luminous particles in an abstract journey through space and form. Live concert images merge with filmed choreography, while the performers dissolve into streams of light, geometric structures and fluid-like patterns. The visuals move between the infinitely small and the infinitely large, suggesting a meditation on human connection, transformation and destiny. Rather than presenting a conventional performance narrative, the video turns movement into matter, building a hypnotic visual counterpart to the song's themes of instability, obsession and transcendence.

Factoids & Trivia

• Released in November 2009, "Fragile Tension" was the third single from Depeche Mode's album "Sounds of the Universe."

• The video could not use conventional lip-synced performance footage because the available concert material did not show Dave Gahan singing "Fragile Tension."

• Existing live footage of the band was combined with newly filmed abstract dance choreography to create a loose visual representation of humanity's journey.

• The imagery was built around ideas including sacred geometry, DNA, quantum theory, fractal geometry and the circulation of atoms through the universe.

• Visual artist Memo Akten developed custom C++ software with the openFrameworks toolkit to process footage of the band and dancers.

• The program analyzed movement using optical-flow techniques and generated particles, geometric forms and fluid effects from the performers' motion.

• The animations were performed in real time rather than created with conventional keyframes. The resulting sequences were later composited and edited using standard post-production tools.

• The video was produced by Sam Brown and was made for the Martin Gore composition sung by Dave Gahan.
