Synopsis
Set to Elastica's "Connection," the video turns cancer into a physical opponent. In a wrecking yard, a group of women in bright pink outfits perform a punchy, synchronized routine around a large American car representing the disease. Their playful movements gradually become an act of collective defiance, with the choreography building toward the car's destruction. Designed as both a promotional film and a dance lesson, the video invites Race for Life participants to learn the routine and perform it together before their events.
Factoids & Trivia
- The film was commissioned for Cancer Research UK's 2013 Race for Life events across the United Kingdom, where participants were encouraged to use the routine as a warm-up before the race.
- The campaign's central message was "Cancer, we're coming to get you," replacing the traditionally somber tone of cancer fundraising with an openly confrontational and celebratory attitude.
- The choreography was created by Marianne Machin and was supported by a separate tutorial so participants could learn the routine in advance.
- Elastica's "Connection" provides the soundtrack. The song's brisk, guitar-driven energy helped frame the campaign as a pop performance rather than a conventional charity appeal.
- The visual production was created through Mother London, with Colonel Blimp handling production and The Mill completing the post-production work.
- Artist Alex Trochut designed the graphics, clothing patches, and bandanas used in the film, reinforcing the video's bright, unified visual identity.
- The "Cancer Slam" routine continued to appear at Race for Life activities after the original 2013 campaign, including public promotional events in 2014.
