Synopsis

Two socially awkward young men attempt their own version of a "Weird Science" experiment, assembling a mysterious girl from an assortment of household objects and 1990s pop-culture relics. Their creation, Kelly, quickly develops a mind of her own and becomes interested in another boy. As the friends struggle with jealousy and the prospect of losing her, the story shifts into a playful small-town romance inspired by both teen fantasy and "Romeo and Juliet." The band performs throughout the tale, which ends with the boys facing the consequences of their experiment.

Factoids & Trivia

• The concept was described as "Weird Science meets Romeo and Juliet," combining the 1985 film's artificial-girl premise with a story about divided romantic loyalties.

• The bedroom experiment uses a deliberately nostalgic collection of 1990s objects, including a Sega Genesis, Pogs, Beanie Babies, a Furby, Tiger handheld games, a Yak Bak and a troll doll.

• The video was filmed almost entirely in and around Westfield, New Jersey, including locations connected to the band members and their friends. Reported locations include the Rialto, Echo Lake Park, South Avenue's 7/11 and Kehler Stadium.

• The production used a Canon C300 camera. The crew also included a dedicated production designer, stylist and visual-effects artist, giving the video a more elaborate narrative-film feel than a basic performance clip.

• Kelly is played by Maria Tolbert, a professional ballet dancer, model and actress. The character's name and presentation reference Kelly LeBrock's character from "Weird Science."

• The video's young supporting cast includes Merritt Reid as Ken, along with performers portraying the girls, bicycle kids and a movie-theater child.

• "Wallflowers" was released as part of the Static Jacks album "In Blue," which arrived in the United States on October 1, 2013. The music video premiered in September 2013.
