Synopsis
The Beards turn their beard-worshipping anthem into an absurd action fantasy. A lone bearded hero moves through a hostile, clean-shaven world before the conflict escalates into a full-scale clash between bearded forces and the city he came from. The band perform amid the deliberately exaggerated spectacle, while the song's romantic sales pitch is treated like revolutionary propaganda. The result is part music video, part low-budget fantasy epic, and part deliberately overblown advertisement for the supposed pleasures of dating a bearded man.
Factoids & Trivia
- The official clip was released online in January 2012, although its title identifies it as a 2011 film clip.
- The video was made for the title track from The Beards' third album, "Having a Beard Is the New Not Having a Beard."
- Production credits published with the official upload list writing by Tom Bettany, Joel McMillan, Joshua Fielder and Michael Bidstrup, with the band members contributing beyond their on-screen performance.
- The song reached No. 99 in Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2011, giving the beard-themed comedy band one of its most visible Australian chart moments.
- The track was nominated for APRA Song of the Year in 2012.
- The clip won Best Video at the 2012 Fowler's Live Music Awards in South Australia.
- Musically, the song marked a move away from the band's earlier folk-rock approach toward a glossy, synth-heavy 1980s-style rock sound. The video matches that shift with its deliberately cinematic scale and mock-heroic tone.
- The song was also performed by Ecca Vandal at the 2012 APRA Awards, with The Beards' vocalist Johann Beardraven appearing alongside her.
