Synopsis

In a bleak, futuristic world, a woman moves through stark corridors and shadowy spaces while mysterious figures appear to monitor and pursue her. Her journey is intercut with CHVRCHES performing amid geometric patterns, pulsing lights and abstract electronic imagery. The narrative suggests a romance shaped by virtual reality, manipulation and false perceptions, gradually shifting between physical and artificial worlds. As the tension builds, the video becomes increasingly disorienting, culminating in a dizzying, otherworldly climax that leaves reality itself uncertain.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Lies" was released as a music video on November 4, 2013, following the release of CHVRCHES' debut album, *The Bones of What You Believe*.
  • The song was CHVRCHES' first public release. It initially appeared online in 2012 through the Neon Gold blog, when the band offered very little biographical information and maintained an air of mystery.
  • The video draws on science-fiction and virtual-reality imagery, with several observers comparing its atmosphere to dystopian films and 1990s computer-generated fantasy.
  • A 360-degree camera rig was used for the video's climax, adding to the feeling that the viewer is being pulled through an unstable digital environment.
  • Production credits list Academy Films, while the editing was handled by Ian McLaughlin.
  • The clip helped establish an early visual identity for CHVRCHES built around dark settings, bright geometric light patterns and a tension between human emotion and artificial environments.
