Darwin Deez - Constellations

ArtistDarwin Deez

Wiki

Synopsis

Darwin Deez appears as the host of a retro-styled science program, presenting an earnest lesson about stars, space and the mysteries of existence. His lecture is repeatedly interrupted by romantic and sensual distractions, creating a playful contrast between scientific focus and earthly desire. The video combines deadpan performance, theatrical studio sets, cosmic diagrams and deliberately artificial television imagery. Its bright, whimsical surface mirrors the song's catchy energy while hinting at the more existential questions beneath the cheerful melody.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in San Francisco over three days, during a break in Darwin Deez's touring schedule.
  • Deez said the production was shot on a RED camera costing approximately $17,000. He also noted that hundreds of hours of work and thousands of dollars went into the clip.
  • The concept was inspired by Carl Sagan's television series "Cosmos." The video reimagines that kind of educational space program as an eccentric, flirtatious studio production.
  • Deez had very little creative input on the video. The central concept, visual style and staging came from the production team.
  • The clip was released in September 2010 for a song that had originally appeared as a single in December 2009 and on Deez's self-titled debut album.
  • "Constellations" was re-released digitally in October 2010 with remixes by SBTRKT and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs.
  • The video helped establish Deez's reputation for inventive, offbeat music videos, alongside the widely noticed clips for "Radar Detector" and "Up In The Clouds."
