Synopsis

Filmed at Wembley Stadium on April 20, 1992, the performance presents David Bowie and Annie Lennox joining Queen for a dramatic live rendition of "Under Pressure." Backed by Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon and the touring musicians, Bowie handles his original vocal parts while Lennox takes the role associated with Freddie Mercury. The staging is theatrical, with the singers moving around the microphones and playing off each other's intensity. The performance closes as a tribute to Mercury and the concert's AIDS-awareness campaign.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The performance took place at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness, held several months after Mercury's death.
  • It marked the first time Bowie performed "Under Pressure" before a live audience. He and Queen had recorded the original song together in 1981.
  • Annie Lennox was not part of the original recording. At Wembley, she supplied the sections originally sung by Mercury, creating a duet rather than attempting to imitate him.
  • The surviving members of Queen performed on the track: Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, supported by keyboard player Spike Edney.
  • Rehearsal footage from the event also circulates and shows Bowie and Lennox working through the arrangement with Queen in a much less formal setting.
  • Queen and Bowie never made a conventional promotional video together for the original 1981 recording. Their Wembley performance consequently became the most widely recognized filmed collaboration between the artists.

Lyrics

Mm ba ba de
Um bum ba de
Um bu bu bum da de
Pressure pushing down on me
Pressing down on you no man ask for
Under pressure - that burns a building down
Splits a family in two
Puts people on streets
Um ba ba be
Um ba ba be
De day da
Ee day da - that's o.k.
It's the terror of knowing
