Synopsis

On the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic, Rose DeWitt Bukater, a young woman trapped by her wealthy family's expectations, falls in love with Jack Dawson, a penniless artist traveling in steerage. Their romance unfolds as class divisions, personal conflicts, and the ship's collision with an iceberg turn the luxurious voyage into a desperate fight for survival.

• The first footage shot for the production was filmed at the real Titanic wreck in 1995. Underwater sequences used the research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh and its Mir submersibles.

• A large-scale reconstruction of the Titanic was built at Baja Studios in Mexico. The production also combined physical sets, miniatures, computer-generated imagery, and historically researched details to recreate the ship and its sinking.

• With a reported production budget of approximately $200 million, Titanic was the most expensive film ever made when it entered production. Filming lasted 160 days, longer than the planned 138-day schedule.

• Before its release, the film was widely viewed as a risky project because of its enormous cost, extended production, and nearly three-hour running time. It ultimately became the first film to pass $1 billion in worldwide box-office revenue.

• Titanic received 14 Academy Award nominations at the 70th Academy Awards and won 11, including Best Picture. Its 11 victories matched the record previously set by Ben-Hur.

• The elderly couple shown embracing in bed as the water rises was based on Isidor and Ida Straus, the department-store owners who died aboard the Titanic. A filmed scene dramatizing their final decision was later removed.

• The song "My Heart Will Go On" became an international hit and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Its music was composed by James Horner, with lyrics by Will Jennings.
