Synopsis

During a New Year's Eve celebration aboard the luxury liner Poseidon, a massive rogue wave capsizes the ship and traps most passengers below deck. A small group of survivors refuses to wait for rescue, making its way through flooded corridors, collapsing rooms, and the inverted vessel in search of a route to safety before the ship sinks completely.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Poseidon is a loose remake of the 1972 disaster film The Poseidon Adventure, which was adapted from Paul Gallico's 1969 novel of the same name.
  • Industrial Light & Magic created the ship and the capsizing sequence digitally. The effects team designed a 200-foot wave striking a 1,200-foot cruise ship from multiple angles.
  • The Poseidon itself was computer-generated even during the extended opening shot, which follows a character moving around the ship's exterior in broad daylight.
  • The digital destruction of the ship required fluid-simulation technology developed with Stanford University. The work was significant enough to earn the film an Academy Award nomination for Visual Effects at the 79th Academy Awards.
  • Much of the production was filmed on sound stages at Warner Bros. studios in Burbank, California, with the ship's interior sets built to support the film's shifting, water-filled environments.
  • The film was released theatrically in both standard and IMAX formats on May 12, 2006.
