Biography

Ice Cube (born O'Shea Jackson on June 15, 1969) is an American rapper, songwriter, actor, screenwriter, producer, and entrepreneur. A central figure in the development of West Coast hip-hop, he first gained prominence as a member of N.W.A before establishing himself as a major solo artist and a durable presence in film and television.

Raised in South Central Los Angeles, Jackson began writing rhymes as a teenager and formed the rap group C.I.A. with Sir Jinx in the mid-1980s. His association with Dr. Dre led to a place in the emerging N.W.A collective, alongside Eazy-E, DJ Yella, and MC Ren. Cube was an important writer and vocalist during the group's formative period, contributing substantially to the material on Straight Outta Compton (1988). The album's confrontational portrayal of police violence, poverty, and life in Los Angeles helped make gangsta rap a national force, while Cube's direct, tightly constructed verses became one of the group's defining features.

Ice Cube left N.W.A in 1989 following a dispute over compensation and management. His solo debut, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted (1990), combined his politically charged writing with production from New York's Bomb Squad. It established him as a force beyond the group and was followed by Death Certificate (1991), a darker and more explicitly political record shaped by the social tensions of the period, and The Predator (1992), which became one of his most commercially successful albums. Songs such as "It Was a Good Day" showed a more reflective side of his writing, balancing his anger and social commentary with detailed storytelling.

Cube also extended his influence through collaborations and group projects. He helped develop Da Lench Mob and later formed Westside Connection with WC and Mack 10. Their 1996 album Bow Down reinforced his commitment to West Coast identity and competitive rap. His subsequent solo albums included Lethal Injection (1993), War & Peace Vol. 1 (1998), War & Peace Vol. 2 (2000), Laugh Now, Cry Later (2006), Raw Footage (2008), I Am the West (2010), and Everythangs Corrupt (2018). In the 2020s, he joined Snoop Dogg, E-40, and Too Short for the group project Snoop Cube 40 $hort and continued his solo work with Man Down (2024) and Man Up (2025).

His film career began with a widely praised performance as Doughboy in John Singleton's Boyz n the Hood (1991). Cube subsequently appeared in films including Trespass, Three Kings, and Anaconda, but his most lasting screen work came through the Friday series, which he co-wrote and starred in. As a producer and filmmaker, he helped shape a strain of commercially successful Black comedy and urban cinema. He later headlined the Barbershop series and appeared in mainstream comedies such as Are We There Yet?, Ride Along, 21 Jump Street, and 22 Jump Street.

Ice Cube's career is defined by an unusual crossover: he moved from uncompromising political rap to screenwriting, acting, and film production without abandoning his West Coast identity. N.W.A. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, recognizing the group's historical impact and Cube's role in making its music influential well beyond hip-hop.
