Synopsis

A young man drifts through a stark, dreamlike world of crooked architecture, strange shadows, and impossible machinery. He encounters the Red Hot Chili Peppers scattered across this nightmare landscape, each member performing on an unconventional, surreal instrument. Anthony Kiedis appears as a ghostly figure trapped in a tower, while the protagonist moves through corridors and precarious structures before confronting a monstrous threat. The video ends as a rescue unfolds, leaving the story suspended between dream, hallucination, and escape.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was released in 2000 as part of the promotional campaign for the band's album Californication.

• Its monochrome Gothic style draws heavily on German Expressionism, especially the visual language associated with the 1920 film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Cubism, Surrealism, Futurist art, and the work of M. C. Escher are also visible influences.

• The visual concept was not intended as a direct copy of Caligari. The filmmakers reportedly studied the film, then deliberately moved toward the look of paintings and graphic art to create something less derivative.

• The band's instruments are deliberately transformed into surreal props. John Frusciante plays a long rope as though it were a guitar, Flea performs on high-voltage wires, and Chad Smith uses a rotating medieval clock as a drum kit.

• The song concerns addiction and was written in connection with the death of former Chili Peppers guitarist Hillel Slovak, who died from a heroin overdose in 1988. That background gives the video's nightmare imagery a darker emotional context.

• The video was nominated for Video of the Year at the 2000 My VH1 Music Awards, while "Otherside" was also nominated for Song of the Year.
