Synopsis

Set inside a theatrical music hall, the video turns the song into a backstage cabaret performance. Male musicians prepare in dressing rooms and cross the stage while a chorus line moves through curtains and stairways. Neil Tennant sings amid the scenery, maintaining the Pet Shop Boys' detached stage persona, while Chris Lowe gets a rare spotlight of his own. Dusty Springfield appears in glamorous close-up, delivering her vocal lines as the performance builds around the contrast between backstage solitude and showbiz spectacle.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in a music hall and uses its curtains, drapes, stage, dressing rooms, chorus line and pit-orchestra imagery to create an old-fashioned theatrical setting.
  • Chris Lowe's brief dance behind the stage curtains became one of the video's most memorable moments. Lowe reportedly wanted to perform a specific routine and had the crew leave the set while he filmed it.
  • The photograph used for the cover of the Pet Shop Boys' album "Actually" was taken during the making of this video. The selected image was an outtake from the session.
  • Released on August 10, 1987, the single became a major comeback moment for Dusty Springfield. It reached No. 2 in both the United Kingdom and the United States, giving her the biggest US hit of her career.
