Synopsis

Paul Carrack's "Eyes Of Blue" video reflects the song's portrait of someone carrying disappointment while trying to keep a dream alive. Carrack performs the reflective ballad as the imagery connects personal heartache with the possibility of redemption. Its emotional focus is less on spectacle than on the contrast between regret and renewed hope, echoing the song's message that a painful past does not have to prevent someone from taking hold of a long-held ambition.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Eyes Of Blue" was written for the 1996 Sheffield-set football film *When Saturday Comes*, which stars Sean Bean. Producer Jimmy Daley gave Carrack a basic outline about a young man who nearly wastes his chance to achieve his childhood dream.
  • Carrack wrote the song before learning that the character's dream involved playing for Sheffield United. As a lifelong Sheffield Wednesday supporter, he later recalled being mortified by the detail, with his son Charlie joking that the film must therefore be a comedy.
  • The film's protagonist, Jimmy Muir, is a brewery worker who receives an opportunity to play for Hallam and is offered a trial with Sheffield United. The song was shaped around his struggle to overcome self-inflicted setbacks.
  • The track appears on Carrack's 1996 album *Blue Views*, his first solo studio album in seven years at the time.
  • "Eyes Of Blue" reached the UK Top 40 and also received substantial adult contemporary radio exposure in the United States.
  • Carrack later revisited the composition in a new recording for his 2008 album *I Know That Name*, and performed another rearranged version with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on *A Different Hat*.
  • The official Paul Carrack website preserves the clip in its archive of official videos, alongside videos from his solo career and work with Ace and Mike + The Mechanics.

Lyrics

I want to know how does it feel
Behind those eyes of gold
You've made your mistakes
And now your heart aches
Behind those eyes of blue

People may say you've had your chance
And let it slip away
But hard as they try
There's a dream that won't die
Behind those eyes of blue

Maybe once in a while
