Synopsis

Shot in stark black and white, the promo places Steve Hogarth and Marillion against the exposed rocks and rough seas of Northern Ireland's Giant's Causeway. The band perform amid the coastal landscape while close-ups of Hogarth give the song's plea for peace an intimate focus. The elemental setting, empty horizon and wintry atmosphere connect the personal emotion of the performance with the song's broader response to the violence and division associated with the Troubles.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed at the Giant's Causeway in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
  • Steve Hogarth recalled that the shoot was extremely cold. He said he wore several layers of clothing, with little shelter available along the coast.
  • The filming took place on November 9, 1989, the day the Berlin Wall fell. Hogarth remembered returning to the hotel and seeing the news coverage that evening.
  • "Easter" was written by Hogarth before he joined Marillion. The song originated with his earlier band How We Live and was initially unfinished.
  • Hogarth conceived the song as an anthem for Ireland, inspired in part by "The Skye Boat Song." He described it as a love song and a message of hope for people living amid the threat of violence, rather than as a political statement.
  • The promo accompanied the March 1990 single release from Marillion's *Seasons End*, Hogarth's first studio album with the band.
