Synopsis

Kate Bush surveys the sky from a surreal city rooftop, binoculars in hand, as the world below gives way to an exuberant fantasy parade. Astronauts, aviators, soldiers, dancers and musicians appear amid theatrical costumes, a giant moon and a flying jet. Bush moves between observer and performer, transforming the song's fascination with clouds, weather and childhood imagination into a colorful stage spectacle. The video builds toward a celebratory ensemble performance in which everyday reality seems to dissolve into the limitless sky.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "The Big Sky" was released as the fourth and final single from the album Hounds of Love. The single arrived in the UK on April 28, 1986, and reached No. 37 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • The video received a nomination for Best Female Video at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, alongside nominees including Madonna, Janet Jackson and Cyndi Lauper.
  • Its imagery closely follows the song's central contrast between ordinary human concerns and the vast, constantly changing sky. Binoculars, cloud watching, aviation imagery and the recurring moon motif give the production a playful science-fiction atmosphere.
  • The production is notably ensemble-driven. Rather than relying only on solo performance, it fills the frame with groups of costumed characters, musicians and dancers, creating the feel of a miniature parade, stage show and fantasy film at once.
  • The video was later included in Kate Bush: The Whole Story, the 1986 video compilation that gathered Bush's major promotional films from the period.
