Synopsis

Eric Clapton performs "Blue Eyes Blue" at a white church dressed for a wedding, alternating between acoustic guitar scenes inside the building and shots in the surrounding garden. Clips from the 1999 romantic comedy Runaway Bride are intercut throughout, featuring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere during the film's troubled wedding storyline. As the arrangement builds, Clapton moves from the church interior to the outdoor ceremony setting before ending near the church, returning to the visual mood established at the opening.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was created to promote both Clapton's single and the Runaway Bride soundtrack. The song was written by Diane Warren specifically for the film.
  • Two versions of the video are known: a performance-focused edit and a version that combines Clapton's scenes with footage from Runaway Bride.
  • Clapton's church scenes use a Martin Triple-O acoustic guitar, reinforcing the song's restrained, singer-songwriter presentation.
  • The single was released on July 20, 1999. It appeared on the Runaway Bride soundtrack one week later and was also included on Clapton Chronicles: The Best of Eric Clapton, released on October 12, 1999.
  • The video was later issued in high-definition on both VHS and DVD editions of Clapton Chronicles.
  • In the United States, the video reached No. 19 on VH1's most-played music video chart.

Lyrics

I thought that you would be loving me.
I thought that you were the one who'd stay
forever.
But now, forever's come and gone
And I'm still here alone.

You were only plying.
You were only playing with my heart.
I was never waiting.
I was never waiting for the tears to start.

[chorus]
It was you who put the clouds around me.
