Synopsis

Erasure's "Breath Of Life" places Andy Bell inside a surreal, Alice in Wonderland-inspired fantasy world. He moves through a looking glass and encounters storybook figures and props including the Caterpillar, the Mock Turtle, the Queen of Hearts, oysters, oversized mushrooms, and a goose. Underwater sequences echo the song's imagery of coming up for air, while Bell also performs graceful swimming scenes in silk pajamas. Vince Clarke appears as the tearful Mock Turtle, adding to the video's playful and theatrical atmosphere.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed at a studio in Neasden and at the Olympic diving pool in White City.
  • The production was already competing for attention with preparations for Erasure's Phantasmagorical Entertainment tour. Angela Conway later felt that the tight schedule affected the finished video.
  • Andy Bell had to handle a goose during filming, but the bird repeatedly bit him.
  • Vince Clarke appeared as the Mock Turtle. He later recalled that this was his final video appearance for some time, helping confirm his decision to step away from music-video productions.
  • Clarke was generally uncomfortable making videos and believed that some productions were costing almost as much as the records themselves.
  • The video's fantasy design continued the theatrical visual direction associated with the Chorus era. David Mallet later suggested that the videos may have helped inspire the elaborate stage presentation of the Phantasmagorical Entertainment tour.
  • "Breath Of Life" was released on March 16, 1992, as the fourth and final single from Chorus. It reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart.

Lyrics

(Clarke / Bell)

Never had a point of view
'Cause my mind was always someone else's mind
I never had to tell a lie
'Cause I left the choices up to them
Don't know why, but I did

Oh, I want life
Life wants me
To breathe in its love

Take me I'm yours
Now I'm coming up for air
