Synopsis

Eddie Money performs on an otherwise empty stage, surrounded by a metal ladder, folding chair, microphone and alto saxophone. The stark setting gives the performance a lonely, theatrical quality, while Ronnie Spector appears in separate backstage scenes. She moves through a dressing room and corridor toward the arena floor, remaining partly hidden for much of the video. The black-and-white presentation builds anticipation around her eventual appearance and mirrors the song's blend of modern 1980s rock and 1960s girl-group nostalgia.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was shot entirely in black and white at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada.
  • Ronnie Spector's face is deliberately kept indistinct for much of the video. Her appearance is only fully revealed roughly three-quarters of the way through, turning her arrival into the video's main visual payoff.
  • Spector's vocal line, "Be my little baby," recalls the Ronettes' 1963 hit "Be My Baby." Eddie Money specifically wanted Spector involved after hearing that reference in the song.
  • Money initially disliked the track and considered it too lightweight and pop-oriented. Bringing Spector into the recording helped give the song a stronger connection to rock and roll history.
  • The song became Money's biggest U.S. chart hit, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986.
  • Its success helped revive both performers' careers. It became a major comeback moment for Spector and helped push Money's album "Can't Hold Back" to platinum status.
  • The song received a Grammy nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

Lyrics

Take Me Home Tonight
Eddie Money (featuring Ronnie Spector)

I feel hungry it's a hunger
That tries to keep a man awake at night
Are you the answer I shouldn't wonder
When I can feel you whet my appetite
With all the power you're releasing
It isn't safe to walk the city streets alone
Anticipation's running through me
Let's find the keys and turn the engine on.

I can feel you breathe
