Synopsis

A mother returns home to find Social Services taking her two sons into care. Overwhelmed by the separation, she disguises herself with a wig and glasses, retrieves the boys, and escapes with them by car. Their flight becomes increasingly desperate as they sleep in the vehicle, eat at a diner without enough money to pay, and struggle when the car breaks down. With the family stranded by the roadside, the video closes on the mother seeking help and refusing to abandon her children.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed in Toronto in 1999 over almost a week, under conditions closer to a small film production than a conventional band shoot.

• The production included casting actors for the family story, with the aim of making the situation feel realistic and grounded rather than symbolic or surreal.

• An alternate television edit was prepared for MTV that removed the introductory sequence.

• The song's subject is closely connected to Dolores O'Riordan's experience of becoming a mother. She described "Animal Instinct" as being about the protective instinct that emerges with parenthood.

• The official video was added to The Cranberries' website in July 1999, shortly after the band completed the Toronto shoot.
