Synopsis

Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" video blends Terri Nunn's performance with romantic scenes from Top Gun. Nunn sings while moving through a dark aircraft boneyard, surrounded by abandoned planes and scattered aviation equipment. The setting echoes the film's military atmosphere without placing the band inside the movie's narrative. Intercut footage follows Maverick and Charlie as their relationship develops, giving the video a dreamy, cinematic tone and tying Berlin's synth-pop ballad directly to the film's central love story.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was made as a promotional companion to Top Gun and relies heavily on footage from the film, especially the developing romance between Maverick and Charlie.

• Terri Nunn's performance footage was shot separately from the movie. The aircraft graveyard setting can make the video appear to have been filmed on the Top Gun set, but it was not.

• The band performance was filmed at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California, an appropriate location for a song associated with naval aviation and fighter jets.

• The song was written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock specifically for Top Gun. The film's producers were impressed by an early demo and added romantic material to support the song.

• Berlin's recording became one of the defining movie themes of the 1980s. It won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song and helped turn the band into an international mainstream act.

• "Take My Breath Away" appeared on Berlin's album "Count Three & Pray," but its success created tension within the band because some members felt the ballad moved them away from their established electronic new wave sound.

• The official video continues to be closely identified with Top Gun, making the song and its film imagery difficult to separate in popular culture.
