Synopsis

Seen from the viewpoint of a bird flying over Liverpool and London, the video becomes a dreamlike journey through Beatles history. The camera glides over familiar streets, landmarks, crowds, performers and fleeting scenes that echo the band's songs, films and mythology. Archival footage is blended with newly staged material, creating the impression that the Beatles' story is unfolding below in one continuous stream. The flight eventually brings together images of the group's past and present, turning the video into a visual farewell and reunion.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video premiered on ABC television in the United States on November 19, 1995, shortly before the release of The Beatles Anthology.
  • Its bird's-eye-view concept was designed as a visual tour through Beatles song titles, lyrics and recurring images rather than as a straightforward performance video.
  • References include "Penny Lane," "Paperback Writer," "A Day in the Life," "Eleanor Rigby," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "The Fool on the Hill," "Helter Skelter" and "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill."
  • The replica Cavern Club at The Beatles Story museum in Liverpool was used for a staged sequence. Green-screen techniques allowed archival images of the Beatles to be incorporated into the setting.
  • A gravestone prop referring to "Eleanor Rigby" was later donated to The Beatles Story museum, where it became part of the museum's collection.
  • The song itself began as a home demo John Lennon recorded in New York in 1977. Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr completed it for the Anthology project, with Jeff Lynne helping shape the recording.
  • The single became the Beatles' first newly released recording in 25 years. It reached No. 2 in the United Kingdom and No. 6 in the United States.
  • "Free As A Bird" won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
  • The video was restored in 4K for the 2025 Anthology remaster project, giving its densely layered images a cleaner and more detailed presentation.

Lyrics

Free as a bird
It's the next best thing to be
Free as a bird

Home, home and dry
Like a homing bird I'll fly
As a bird on wings

Whatever happened to
The life that we once knew?
Can we really live without each other?

Where did we lose the touch
That seemed to mean so much?
