Synopsis

When the Backstreet Boys' tour bus breaks down, the group spends the night in a gloomy mansion after their driver promises to find help. As they fall asleep, the house transforms them into horror icons: Brian becomes a werewolf, Howie Dracula, Nick a mummy, A.J. the Phantom of the Opera, and Kevin a split-personality Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Their nightmare becomes a lavish monster party with elaborate dance numbers, before a sudden shock reveals that the terror may not have been a dream after all.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in Los Angeles between June 16 and June 18, 1997. The production reportedly ran for 36 hours, with Nick Carter's mummy sequence filmed last.
  • The concept was shaped by classic horror cinema and Michael Jackson's "Thriller." The haunted-house idea had originally been developed for a proposed Ice Cube video.
  • The costumes turn each member into a different horror archetype: Brian is the werewolf, Howie is Dracula, Nick is the mummy, A.J. is the Phantom of the Opera, and Kevin plays a Jekyll-and-Hyde-style character.
  • Antonio Fargas, famous as Huggy Bear from "Starsky & Hutch," appears as the bus driver. The group and the production team specifically wanted him for the role because of their affection for the television series.
  • Jive Records was initially skeptical of the expensive horror concept and reportedly questioned whether MTV would support it. The group helped finance the production themselves and later had to fight to recover the money.
  • The video received the 1998 MTV Video Music Award for Best Group Video, helping establish it as one of the defining visual statements of the late-1990s boy-band era.
  • Different edits circulated in different markets. The longer version was associated with the US release, while a shorter version was distributed internationally.

Lyrics

Everybody, yeah
Rock your body, yeah
Everybody, yeah
Rock your body right
Backstreet's back, alright

Hey, yeah
Oh my God, we're back again
Brothers, sisters, everybody sing
Gonna bring the flavor, show you how
Gotta question for you better answer now, yeah

Am I original?
