Synopsis

The original European video places Tasmin Archer in a dark, theatrical interior lit by candles, where she performs as glitter drifts around her. John Beck and John Hughes also appear, while brief, dreamlike scenes introduce an elderly man studying old books and a young girl at play. The imagery gives the song's reflections on the Moon, space exploration and lost dreams a mysterious, storybook atmosphere. A separate US version focuses solely on Archer, who sings around an elaborate orrery and a second model displayed on an illuminated table.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Two promotional videos were made. The original version was used in Europe, while a different video was produced for the American market in 1993.
  • The US video was commissioned after Archer's American label viewed her as an alternative artist. Its central visual device is an orrery, a mechanical model of the solar system.
  • The original video was nominated for Best Music Video at the 1993 Brit Awards. The US version received two MTV Video Music Award nominations the following year.
  • Archer and co-writers John Beck and John Hughes developed the song's general structure in 1989, after Hughes had read about the 20th anniversary of the Moon landing. The track was eventually released as Archer's debut single in 1992.
  • Archer later explained that the song was not intended as a simple attack on humanity for leaving Earth. She described it more as a lament that space exploration had not continued far enough to deepen understanding of ecological problems.
