Synopsis

Jay Kay wakes in a messy bedroom and is immediately propelled into a surreal, high-energy dance journey through a large house. He moves across walls and ceilings, bursts through rooms, floats through a party, disrupts domestic scenes, and turns every space into a stage. The video follows the song's carefree message with deliberately impossible movement and playful visual chaos. After racing through the house, Jay returns to his bedroom, where the strange adventure ends as abruptly as it began.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Canned Heat" was the lead single from Jamiroquai's 1999 album *Synkronized*. It reached No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart and became the group's second No. 1 on the US Dance Club Songs chart.
  • The video was produced in May 1999 and combines elaborate room choreography with visual effects. Jay Kay's movement across walls, ceilings, and through solid surfaces gives the clip a loose, dreamlike logic rather than presenting the house as a realistic location.
  • Two principal edits circulated. The censored version blurs the bedroom sequence showing a couple in bed, while the original edit leaves the scene unblurred.
  • The production's post-production work was handled by The Mill in London, with Eric Broms serving as director of photography.
  • The video gained a second wave of recognition after "Canned Heat" was featured in the 2004 comedy film *Napoleon Dynamite*.

Lyrics

You know this boogie is for real.

I used to buy my faith in worship,
But then my chance to Heaven slipped.
I used to worry about the future
But then I throw my caution to the wind.
I had no reason to be care free
No no no, until I took a trip to the other side of town
Yeah yeah yeah, you know I heard that boogie rhythm
Hey- I had no choice but to get down down down down.

(CHORUS)

Dance, nothing left for me to do but dance,
...
