Synopsis

The video presents "Pepper" as a bizarre 1960s television report. In grainy black-and-white footage, police descend on a Texas hotel to arrest Gibby Haynes and his companions in connection with a kidnapping, while reporters crowd around and the rescued victim appears on the scene. The narrative is repeatedly interrupted by brightly colored, old-fashioned variety-show performances from the band, along with cooking-show imagery and other staged television conventions. Erik Estrada plays the kidnapping victim, adding another layer of pop-culture absurdity.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Released in 1996 to promote the album "Electriclarryland," the video helped introduce the notoriously unconventional Butthole Surfers to a much larger MTV audience.
  • The mock-news footage was shot in black and white to resemble a 1960s television newsreel, while the performance sections imitate the saturated look of period variety and cooking programs.
  • Erik Estrada, best known as Officer Frank "Ponch" Poncherello from "CHiPs," appears as the kidnapped man. King Coffey later recalled finding the casting unexpectedly surreal after being told he was traveling from a Zen monastery to Los Angeles to make a pop video.
  • The repeated shots of people eating corn directly from a can were designed as a joke about the formulaic demands of music-video production - the idea that audiences are being spoon-fed a succession of required images.
  • The video's kidnapping-and-arrest scenario evokes the sensational television coverage and crime imagery associated with the 1960s, without presenting a straightforward reconstruction of any single real event.
  • "Pepper" became the band's signature mainstream hit, and its deliberately strange video was a major part of the song's lasting identity.

Lyrics

Marky got with Sharon
And Sharon got Sharice
She was sharing Sharon's outlook
On the topic of disease
Mikey had a facial scar
And Bobby was a racist
They were all in love with dyin'
They were doing it in Texas
Tommy played piano
Like a kid out in the rain
Then he lost his leg in Dallas
He was dancing with a train
They were all in love with dyin'
