Synopsis

Björk appears as both a live-action performer and a brightly colored cartoon figure in a chaotic fantasy about longing for an ideal lover. She dances, sings, and cavorts with Jimmy the Idiot Boy and other eccentric characters in a world filled with surreal transformations, cartoon violence, sexual jokes, and sudden visual gags. The video moves freely between performance footage and hand-drawn animation, turning the song's romantic anticipation into an exuberant, unpredictable parade of cartoon mayhem.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was produced by Spümcø, the Los Angeles animation studio best known for its work on "The Ren & Stimpy Show."
  • Jimmy the Idiot Boy appears as Björk's cartoon companion, while George Liquor makes a brief cameo. Fred Flintstone can also be spotted in the bathroom sequence.
  • The production combined traditional 2-D cel animation with 3-D computer animation, motion-capture work, and blue-screen compositing.
  • Mainstream television versions were edited. MTV removed a scene in which an animated Björk tears a chicken apart and replaced or covered other material considered too explicit.
  • The video won the 1997 Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject, an unusual honor for a music video.
  • Björk was reportedly delighted by the early storyboards, saying the animated version of her looked especially cute.
