Synopsis

Suggs plays a slippery used-car salesman whose criminal operation depends on the rest of Madness stealing vehicles for him. After the gang completes another job, the band members switch from masked crooks to police officers and give chase. The comic pursuit unfolds through quick costume changes, exaggerated gestures, and surreal performance scenes, including Chris Foreman playing guitar in uniform. The video turns the song's denial-filled lyrics into a playful crime caper with a distinctly British, black-comic edge.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video presents the band in two opposing roles: first as a gang of criminals, then as the police officers pursuing Suggs. The switch reinforces the song's central theme of refusing responsibility.
  • Suggs' character combines a used-car salesman with a masked burglar. The implication is that the stolen cars are being passed through his business.
  • The video's visual tone has often been described as comically sinister, with a "Clockwork Orange" feel created by the bowler hats, striped clothing, masks, and stylized criminal behavior.
  • Chris Foreman's guitar solo features the unusual "Super Yob" guitar, originally associated with Slade guitarist Dave Hill. Foreman later confirmed that the instrument's appearance in the video was coincidental rather than evidence that Madness was modeled on Slade.
  • "Shut Up" was released as a single in September 1981 and reached No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart, making it one of Madness' early Top 10 hits.
  • The title phrase is not actually sung in the released lyrics. "Shut up" came from the ending of an earlier version of the song, whose additional verse was later removed.

Lyrics

(W. Wurlitzer)
Date of last revision: August 16, 1993.
I used to work nights with my dad
It was the best job I ever had
Until them blokes on their bikes came through
Said "Come on down to youth, brother, see what's new"
Well come on, come on, come on, let's have some fun tonight
Went to the dance like they said I should
It cost me a bob, but it was quite good
The band were jumpin' and a-jivin' around
Their 20 Watt amps really made a sound
Well come on, come on, come on, let's have some fun tonight
Well, I'll have a cup of tea and then I'll change me name
