Synopsis

The video opens in a movie theater where an audience watches footage of Godzilla approaching through the water. Suddenly, the monster's foot bursts through the screen, unleashing a flood that sweeps through the auditorium. Cars, taxis, a helicopter, and other debris follow, while Jay Kay performs amid the panic. As the theater descends into chaos, the video alternates between the action and clips from the film. The closing shot reveals that the entire disaster has been playing on another cinema screen.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was created as a promotional tie-in for the 1998 film *Godzilla*, whose soundtrack featured "Deeper Underground."

• Much of the theater footage was filmed at Grays' State Theatre in Essex, England.

• Jay Kay later said that the extras were not warned about the sudden rush of water at the start of the sequence. Their startled reactions were therefore presented as genuine.

• Several versions of the video circulated. In one alternate edit, the Godzilla footage is replaced by a man smashing an aquarium, while the rest of the theater sequence remains largely unchanged.

• The final reveal, in which the flooded theater is shown playing on another cinema screen, gives the video a deliberately self-referential twist.

• "Deeper Underground" became Jamiroquai's only UK No. 1 single. It was later included as a bonus track on the band's 1999 album *Synkronized*.

• The track was among the last Jamiroquai recordings to feature founding bassist Stuart Zender before his departure during the *Synkronized* sessions.
