Wiki

Synopsis

Sophie Ellis-Bextor enters a glamorous dance competition with one goal: to win. As the routines continue, she eliminates her rivals through increasingly underhanded tactics, sabotaging performances, drugging competitors and manipulating the judging. Dancing with a male partner, she maintains an elegant, composed facade while causing chaos behind the scenes. Her ruthless campaign eventually pays off, leaving her victorious, surrounded by defeated contestants and clutching the competition's cash prize and golden shoes.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video frames the song as a darkly comic dance contest rather than a straightforward performance clip.
  • Sophie Ellis-Bextor has said the concept was influenced by the 1969 film "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?", which centers on an exhausting dance marathon and the desperation of its contestants.
  • Ellis-Bextor deliberately plays an amoral character. She has described the video persona as mischievous and nasty, using sabotage and outright criminal behavior to secure victory.
  • The song was released in 2001 as the second single from Ellis-Bextor's debut solo album, "Read My Lips." It was written with Gregg Alexander, with production by Alexander and Matt Rowe.
  • The track gained a major second life after appearing during the closing sequence of the 2023 film "Saltburn," renewing interest in both the song and its memorably cutthroat video.

About your kind
And so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so
I'll have to play

If you think you're getting away
I will prove you wrong
I'll take you all the way
Boy, just come along
Hear me when I say
...
