Synopsis

Jay Kay performs "Runaway" in the relaxed surroundings of his home recording studio before the video shifts into a surreal London road trip. Dressed in a full astronaut suit, he drives a small moon buggy through central London, passing recognizable landmarks and turning the city into an otherworldly playground. The contrast between the intimate studio scenes and the public spectacle of the buggy reflects the song's desire to escape pressure and find freedom. The video ultimately circles back to Piccadilly Circus Underground station.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The studio scenes were filmed at Jay Kay's home recording studio in Buckinghamshire.
  • The London sequences were shot around Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and Tower Bridge. The central London filming took place on September 1, 2006.
  • Jay Kay drives a lunar-style moon buggy while wearing an astronaut suit, extending Jamiroquai's long-running space and science-fiction imagery into an urban setting.
  • Photographs from the shoot showed Kay and the buggy at a petrol station, but those scenes were not included in the finished video.
  • The video was completed for the release of "High Times: Singles 1992-2006," the band's first greatest-hits compilation. "Runaway" was the only single released from that collection.
  • The ending returns to Piccadilly Circus Underground station, giving the video a circular structure as the astronaut leaves the vehicle and disappears into the London transit system.
